Seventeen: Fitness Blog:
a secret fix for sore feet from rachel bilson's trainer!

Macey Hall
January 24, 2012

Hey girls, it's Macey from Seventeen. After some intense workouts, the heels and arches of my feet were feeling super-sore, even in my comfiest sneakers. So I decided to try something called orthotics. They're these inserts that go inside your shoes to give your feet extra support. You put them in place of the liners that come with your shoes, and they contour to the arch of your foot, which gives you extra lift on all your planes of motion.Rachel Bilson heading to workout

I tried out a pair of orthotics by Lifestep by Dr. Joseph, who teamed up with celeb trainer Bobby Strom (he works with celebs like Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson!) on versions for both your sneakers and dress shoes.

Bobby collaborated with Dr. Joseph because many of his clients have knee, hip, and lower back problems, and they spend hours in super-high heels, so he thought the shoe inserts would be the perfect corrective tool for them. (And so far so good. Bobby says his celeb clients like Rachel Bilson, Miranda Lambert, Adrianne Palicki, and Scarlett Johansson love wearing them now, especially for long red carpet events!)

I tested the orthotics in my gym shoes and heels and they're insanely comfortable! They took a few days to mold to my feet, but after three days, they were perfect. The pain I usually feel after a long workout was gone!

I might even love the ones for dress shoes more than the workout ones. Usually my feet hurt after wearing heels all day, but my arches felt great after wearing the inserts.

The orthotics are $49.95, check them out now!

Do your feet ever hurt after a long day or workout? Would you try orthotics?

Ever wonder how the stars pull it together for the big night? Well when it comes to slimming down and shaping up for the red carpet, celebs like Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Blake Lively and SELF cover girl Kristen Bell go to Bobby Strom. The sought-after West Hollywood-based fitness expert shares some of his tricks for helping his A-List clients get ready for their red carpet appearances:

...Red-Carpet Secrets: "All the girls are wearing Dr. Joseph's Life Steps Orthotics on the red carpet," Strom says. "It takes the pressure off your lower back and feet and makes it that much more endurable and bearable. I have Scarlett Johansson and Kristen Bell wearing the dress orthotics with their 4-5 inch heels and they swear by them, they love them!" The affordable corrective orthotics, which Strom endorses, are available in dress and regular styles, meaning you can add them to your heels or sneakers. "For $50 you're getting corrective foot gear that corrects all planes of motion. Adrianne Palicki, Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johansson Fight Red Carpet Burn Out With Orthotics

December 12, 2011

It's not easy walking endless awards season carpets in the latest cutting edge heels, so actresses are turning to an affordable foot aid.

But for actresses who walk awards and premiere arrival lines in new unbroken-in designer heels, the red carpet drill is torturous on their feet, legs and backs. At last week's BAFTA LA Britannia Awards, honoree Helena Bonham Carter gave up and walked the carpet barefoot carrying her heels in her hand.

But some smart actresses -- and their stylists -- are taking preventive steps to stop the symptoms of Awards Season burn-out: leg aches, back pain and posture problems.

Scarlett Johansson, Adrianne Palicki, Kristen Bell, Rachel Bilson and Miranda Lambert will be smiling, not wincing in their Manolos and Loubous, thanks to Dr. Joseph’s Lifestep orthotics specifically designed for high heels.

The inventor, Los Angeles based Dr. Robert J. Joseph, has offices in West Hollywood, Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and Garden Grove. He originally designed the orthotics for his charity patients who could not afford the pricier versions. Now word has spread among the well-heeled Hollywood crowd as well.

"It's amazing how one piece of equipment can make such a huge difference in my body,” says Friday Night Lights star Palicki, who can next be seen in G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation and Red Dawn. "I hike, run, workout, do stunts and walk the red carpet in high heels. Dr. Joseph's Orthotics are a life-saver that I literally can't live without."

Jaime King is another orthotic lover. “These orthotics are my new find that everyone needs to know about. The corrective in-soles have been life-altering for everyone I know who wears them, including myself. They keep your posture aligned and when you can't resist slipping into those towering heels, slip these in and voila! Your pelvis and back will stay in place and you, my fashionable friend, will stay on the straight and narrow.

Palicki has been training with celebrity trainer Bobby Strom, a leading fitness expert. Strom has trained Jessica Biel,  Elle MacPherson, Ryan Reynolds, Johansson and (gulp) Blake Lively. He swears by these new orthotics ever since his chronic back pain disappeared in a few days. Lifesteps also come in men's dress shoe sizes and for both sexes' sports shoes.

"The orthotics support the requirements of your feet, restoring the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities. Remember that your feet are connected to your knees, hips and lower back." The trainer, who recalls being impressed by the fact that his client Steven Spielberg was able to afford pricy $400-and-up orthotics for all of his shoes, now jokes that he can afford to do that too. Dr. Joseph’s Lifestep orthotics are only $49.99 a pair. So no need to switch them from shoe to shoe. Just buy a couple of pairs.

Even if you’re not red carpet bound, these sport and dress shoe orthotics will make great stocking stuffers ffor everyone this Xmas. Check out the website drjosephorthotics.com and there’s a even holiday promotional code -- Holiday15 --- for a 15% discount this week.

Heavy Exercise and Sports Injury. Take Care of Your Ankles by. Robert Joseph DPM

Michael Mooney
May 23, 2010

Q. What is the most common injury you see in your practice?
A. Ankle sprains, mistreated or ignored, are easily the most common injuries we see in our practice. Many of our patients have additional continuing foot, knee and back pain because of untreated past ankle sprains that, because the patient did not get professional treatment, were mismanaged. Of course, this means they also had no MRI or X-Ray to determine what the original cause was.

Q. So people treat themselves somehow, and it causes more problems in the long run?
A. Exactly. People usually treat themselves with rest, ice and elevation of the foot. This doesn’t really treat the problem effectively, so when they begin activities a few weeks later they notice that their gait pattern, the way they walk, is compromised. Maybe their ankle or foot swells up and then they find that they can’t wear those great new shoes they just bought.

Q. Does this lead to a cycle of other problems?
A. Yes. Three ligaments make up the ankle: the anterior talofibular (ATF), calcanealfibular (CFL) and posterior talofibular (PTF). Front, middle and back ligaments, respectively. These are the supporting ligaments that    control    foot posture and move- ment. If these ligaments are somehow compromised, what was just a simple sprained ankle can lead to more serious problems, including    foot deformities, hammer toes and bunions, or a much more serious problem, osteoarthritis arthritis, which is the breakdown of cartilage due to opposing bones rubbing together and wearing the cartilage away .

Q. What’s the best way to remedy this situation?
A. The best conservative treatment is immobilization with a prescribed walking boot or ankle brace for two David Beckham weeks, depending on Orthotics with a deep heel cup to support the ankle can also do wonders. Physical therapy is then prescribed to help strengthen and stabilize the ankle. One to two months later, if this conservative treatment fails, surgical repair of the ligaments might be required. In the past we were taught to surgically split a major tendon in half, and anchor it to the bone, which is rather drastic. Recent advances in techniques favor taking the ankle capsule, which holds the fluid in the ankle, and suturing it to the bone. This way recovery is quicker.  After three weeks of non-weight bearing status, the capsule heals nicely and we follow it with physical therapy.

Q. So do you explore the best non-surgical therapy before con- sidering surgery?
A. Yes. Conservative care must be attempted before surgery is con- sidered. With the latest techniques available via physical therapy, core training and chiropractic we can often times recover full function without surgery, so you’re back playing tennis or favorite pastimes in short order.
